Co-authors of Roseland: Playground
of the Finger Lakes, 1925-1985, schedule September book signings.
Released in late July, the history of Canandaigua's amusement
park is co-authored by Lynda McCurdy Hotra and Sherman Farnham.
Hotra is the author of several books about Ontario County history
and has been working on the Roseland project since its inception
in the late 1980s. Farnham is a retired banker and amateur historian
who joined the team in early 2006. Ann H. Stevens of East River
Editorial was the book's editor. Oksana H. Fuller and Cindy A.
Harris were responsible for the book's graphic design and artwork.
Fuller has worked with Hotra for many years to bring the project
to completion.
The book is sold in an oversized 11 x 14 inch format to
allow an interesting and innovative approach to graphics. By
including historical text, pictures, memorabilia, reminiscences
and informational sidebars, the book captures the fun and excitement
of being at Roseland.
Much of the book's impact comes from its more than 300
photographs. Most of these come from the collection of the Ontario
County Historical Society, but many were provided by the families
of founder William Muar and subsequent owner Lester Boyce. Of
particular note is a portfolio of photos taken by photographer
Tom Cooley, who took many color photographs of the park during
its last season of operation (1985). Cooley donated the use of
these photos for the book.
Of the original print run of 3,000 copies, approximately
one-third have been sold to-date.
