Child’s Play: Toys and Games From Our Past
June 18, 2005 - May 2006
This exhibit features toys and games from the OCHS collection and from lenders in the community. The toys will be thematically presented – toys for preschoolers, toys that teach morals and social values, toys that aid in role modeling for boys and girls, action and fantasy toys, science and technology toys, seasonal toys, and games. In addition, there are photos and illustrations of popular toys and games from the late 19th and 20th centuries, photos of Ontario County children, and where possible information about the children who once played with these toys.
One of the featured groups of toys are those recently donated by Nina Colgrove who grew up on Washington Street in Canandaigua. Among the 50 toys donated, dating mostly from the 1930s and 40s, are a
cook stove, kitchen sink, utensils for baking and cooking, dollhouses, vacuum cleaner, washboard, clothes wringer, ironing board, and a set of Dionne Quintuplet dolls. Everything a little girl could need to play house!
