Winter Speaker Series: Conococheague Institute

December 15 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Matthew Wedd and Amelia Craven: “Clothing the Colonies: Cloth and Costume in the 18th Century.” Join our guest presenters The Conococheague Institute in learning about the clothing and textiles that made up the 18th Century wardrobe in the British Colonies.

Period Source Imagery, Merchant Records and Probate Inventories give a rich view into the clothing of the time that is in stark contrast to the modern conceptions of Cookie Cutter Colonials and Redcoats in their ‘tricorns’, and Buckskinned ‘frontiersman’. Learning how to dress as both a man and a woman, you’ll be ready to step back in time and walk the streets of Philadelphia or New York. A detailed look into the construction of the clothes, the production of cloth and even the dyes that create the various hues will give a finer appreciation for the Clothing of the Colonies.

The Conococheague Institute is a 501(c)3 Non Profit located in Franklin County, PA and focuses on the preservation and education of mid 18th Century lifestyles.
